The Role of Eco-Friendly Packaging in Achieving the SDGs

With the condition of the Earth increasingly critical, environmentally friendly packaging needs to be promoted more massively.

Not only that, this is an important step to improve the implementation of the SDGs. The United Nations (United Nations) initiated  the  SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) for the first time in 1992 at the Earth Summit, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Currently, we are  in the process of achieving The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development which has been triggered since 2015. In this article, you can understand more about the SDGs and how eco-friendly packaging plays a role in achieving some of its goals.

Get to Know More About the SDGs

The Sustainable Development Goals are a major commitment carried out by more than 178 countries. Of course, the main goal is to maintain the continuity of the Earth along with all its animal and biological diversity.

In September 2015, 17 goals were launched that will be achieved together in 2030 through the UN Development Summit.

All of these goals have attracted the attention of various countries in almost all parts of the world, including Indonesia. Indonesia, through Bappenas, is committed to implementing the SDGs at the national, subnational, and community levels.

This commitment has also been carried out by many environmentalists, organizations, companies, and so on through various measures.

BIOPAC  is one of the companies that contributes to the success of the implementation of the SDGs through their business processes and eco-friendly packaging products.

The Role of Eco-Friendly Packaging for the SDGs

With the massive promotion of the implementation of the SDGs, eco-friendly packaging has also experienced an increase in its usage trend this year. This is due to the crazy amount of plastic waste from packaging production globally according to Environment + Energy Leader — around 400 million tons.

This is not offset by the percentage of plastic that can be recycled, which is only less than 20%. Therefore, the role of eco-friendly packaging is very important here.

There are several SDGs goals that are affected in relation to environmentally friendly packaging, namely;

SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production

This pillar encourages manufacturers to use packaging in moderation without overdoing it. This pillar also urges businesses not to use oversized disposable packaging for the sake of the impression of a lot of products.

SDG 14: Ocean Ecosystems

BIOPAC is an environmentally friendly packaging, does not contain plastic, and will not decompose into microplastics and nanoplastics, including if disposed of in the sea. BIOPAC uses seaweed raw materials, which support marine biodiversity, and is used as food for turtles, fish, and other marine animals.

SDG 15: Terrestrial Ecosystems

By producing packaging that does not contain plastic and will not decompose into microplastics and nanoplastics, BIOPAC is safe for consumption by land animals, including worms, poultry and so on. When disposed of in the soil, BIOPAC is also a biofertilizer that can increase soil fertility.

SDG 13: Addressing Climate Change

With climate change becoming more extreme from the seasons to the weather, packaging from natural materials plays a role in reducing carbon emissions through the production process. One of them is biodegradable packaging from BIOPAC made from seaweed. The manufacturing process does not produce pollutants that can harm the Earth’s climate.

As the first eco-friendly seaweed packaging manufacturer in Indonesia, BIOPAC is committed to supporting the SDGs with safe, affordable, and easy-to-obtain packaging. Let’s start using eco-friendly packaging from now on!
