Green Hotel: Get to Know Each Other Closer Through BIOPAC

In recent years, the green trend or environmentally friendly practices have become a hot topic in the hospitality industry, namely green hotels.

Consumers are becoming more aware of the environmental impact of their habits and are looking for ways to minimize their carbon footprint, including in accommodation choices.

Hotels and restaurants that demonstrate a commitment to sustainability are now more attractive to guests, especially among millennials and Gen Z.

This is evidenced by the sustainability trend discussed by the Chairman of PHRI (Indonesian Restaurant Hotel Association), Hariyadi Sukamdani, through Kumparan.

He mentioned that now is the time when consumers become more and more picky about the hotels where they will stay — where they will choose one that prioritizes environmental friendliness.

Therefore, the transition of the hospitality industry to a new sustainability standard called green hotel must be increasingly encouraged.

Not only is it important for the preservation of nature around the area, this renewable hotel concept will also protect the local community from the adverse effects of pollutants.

Then, how is BIOPAC able to support this green hotel? Come on, check out the article together!

Green Hotel: Definition and Criteria

According to the ASEAN Tourism Standard, a green hotel is  a  hotel concept that is committed to reducing negative impacts on the environment through various sustainable practices.

These hotels implement policies and procedures designed to reduce the use of natural resources, manage waste effectively, and create a healthier environment for guests and staff.

Some of the key features of a green hotel include:

  • Use of Renewable Energy: The utilization of environmentally friendly energy, such as solar and wind, to reduce their carbon footprint.
  • Energy and Water Efficiency: The application of energy- and water-saving technologies, such as LEDs, efficient heating systems, and water-saving devices.
  • Solid and Liquid Waste Reduction and Management: Efforts to reduce waste by recycling, composting, and avoiding single-use plastics for sustainability.
  • Support for Local Communities: Hotels support local communities by using local products, which reduces transportation emissions and improves the local economy.
  • Eco-Friendly Design and Construction: Designs that use eco-friendly materials and maximize air circulation and natural lighting for efficiency.

In addition, there are other criteria such as:

  • Environmental policies and practices in hotel operations,
  • The use of green products,
  • Development of human resources,
  • Air quality management,
  • Noise pollution control, and
  • Management of toxic substances and waste

If a hotel is able to meet the above criteria (ASEAN Green Hotel Standard principles), then the Indonesian government through the Ministry of Tourism will award the Green Hotel Award.

In fact, BIOPAC has collaborated with several hotels to support the transition to green hotels, one of which is the Grand Luley hotel  in North Sulawesi.

We realize that the hospitality industry cannot move alone in realizing the standards of ASEAN Green Hotel. Therefore, there needs to be support from the manufacturing industry that prioritizes green products.

Departing from the goal of caring for the Earth, BIOPAC continues to strive to support various parties who want to implement sustainability.

This is realized by making biodegradable, safe products, and utilizing environmentally friendly materials, namely seaweed.

It is hoped that BIOPAC will be able to help especially businesses in the hospitality industry to not only meet the demand of the market that is increasingly concerned about the environment, but also to contribute to protecting the earth for future generations.
